Dining with Andrew Atkinson
Heading up the culinary team at The Michelangelo, Andrew Atkinson has a proud history in some of South Africa's best known hotel kitchens. Having started his career with the Southern Sun and working his way through a number of hotels, Andrew brings a wealth of knowledge and superior recipes to The Michelangelo table.
He also had a role in opening the Sandton Hilton Hotel and the first Sheraton Hotel & Towers in South Africa. Andrew ran his own business for four years and says he took up the position at The Michelangelo when he decided to sell his business and return to his first love - food and the preparation of it for an appreciative audience.
The list of his favourite jobs and opportunities include cooking for Queen Elizabeth, Prince Phillip, Prince Charles, Bill Clinton, Nelson Mandela and Thabo Mbeki, UB 40 and Sting. He has also captained the SA National Culinary Team which competed at various competitions and South African promotions around the world and represented South Africa at various international competitions in Zimbabwe, Berlin, Scotland and Ireland. On a lighter note, he was one of the chefs on the South African version of the British TV show "Ready, Steady, Cook".
